How multi dictionary can work together?

Hi all,

I have a general questions and hope to get answer from you.

It is better to explain by giving a scenario.

I had a customization for a client which have a modified Vendor Maintance window (some custom controls in the window). Use can use this modified Vendor Maintenace window without problem. Now, they installed the Project Accounting module which presents an alternate version of the Vendor Maintenance window as well which includes a Project button to access additional project-related fields. This results in an problem - either selecting our customization or selecting Project Accounting version. How can them be used in the same time?

Even more generally, if another third party vendor develop a customization which have another version of the Vendor Maintenance window, How do they work together?

Thanks!

Winson

    Winson,

As I think others have covered, you cannot merge customizations. You must choose which alternate window to use. It is for this reason that triggers should be used instead of alternate windows.

You can use Modifier with VBA to add functionality to any window. This could be a solution for you if you want your customization to work regardless of which alternate window is used.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

You can have as many customised dictionaries installed as you like - but a user can only be set up to access one - if they have a common Alternate Dynamic window.

So you could create 3 new products - each with a copy of the GP Vendor Maintenance window in them. Now you have a choice of 5 versions of the same window (The Standard version, 3 alternate versions, and the PA version.)

These are all stored in different dictionaries and all of these dictionaries can be included in a single dynamics.set file (once their product ID is unique of course). However...using User Security you decide which version a user can see - and you can only choose one per user.

well if the customizations are done thru dexterity i believe you will be able to see them in your security but i believe its more complicated to have all customizations work on a single machine as one logic can cancel others purposes. So when I had faced this type of situations and cannot avoid the removal of third parties I setup the customizations depending on who uses them, 1 user may be utilizing a customization but not the others, by segregating security and dictionaries you can make them live in the same environment, i dont recommend it without prior review of systems requirements as this might tell me that there has been little planning on what is added to the application. And could drive your reports or future upgrades into a painful situation.
