Updating Unit Cost Based on Last Direct Cost

Hi:

In a Sandbox, we copied a company into another test company.

The test company has remnants of ledger entries.  So, we cannot change the Unit Cost within the Item Card.

Is there a way to use a Configuration Package to "copy" the Unit Cost from Last Direct Cost or import only Unit Cost from an Excel spreadsheet?

Do we even need to update Unit Cost for these FIFO-based items, since Last Direct Cost is in the Item Card?

Thanks!

John

Updating Unit Cost Based on Last Direct Cost
    Hello,

In a Business Central Sandbox test company with FIFO costing and existing ledger entries, you typically cannot update the Unit Cost directly via the Item Card or Configuration Package.

However, for FIFO items, Unit Cost isn't used for inventory valuation—actual costs from transactions are—so updating it may not be necessary.

Instead, Last Direct Cost reflects recent purchase prices and can be used for reporting or pricing logic.

If needed, you can import Last Direct Cost into a custom field using a Configuration Package or Excel, serving as a reference without altering system-controlled values.

If you are using FIFO you can mostly ignore that unit cost. That field is really just showing your average unit cost for any inventory on hand. You can click on the unit cost to see the breakdown historically and confirm the calculation (Cost Amount / Quantity = Unit Cost). There will be a "Closing entry" for the day that is the average and then the Unit Cost for the actual inventory transaction.

But if you want to change it you can try a few of the following options, these may lead to some validation problems though.

    1. You can use a configuration package and disable validation on all fields:

    2. You can use an app like the data editor: Table Data Editor 2.0
    3. If you have any inventory on hand you can try to negative adjust everything and then positive adjust it in at a new cost (you can see in my screenshot above on closing entry for 10/27/2025 that I had two positive adjustments that day - 2 for 8$, 1 for 15$ but I had a negative adjustment of 1 unit which took the 15$ out of inventory first so that daily calculated unit cost is then 8$).

Let me know if that helps!
