How to identify NAV cumulative update version from a .bak database?

Hi everyone,

I’m working on an upgrade project for a customer using Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016, and I’ve only been provided with a .bak database backup.

Before proceeding, I’d like to determine which cumulative update (CU) version the database is on, so I can install the appropriate NAV version for compatibility.

Is there a way to identify the exact NAV 2016 version or CU directly from the SQL database?

For example, are there specific tables or fields (like build number or version) that I should check?

Any guidance or best practices would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

    Hello,
You usually can get close enough directly from SQL, and the best thing to look for is the application build number stored in the NAV database, then match that build to Microsoft’s NAV 2016 CU list. The simplest place to check is typically the [$ndo$dbproperty] table after restoring the backup to SQL; that table usually contains version/build information for the database/application. Once you get the 9.0.xxxxx build, compare it to Microsoft’s NAV 2016 cumulative update build overview to identify the CU. If for some reason that table doesn’t give you what you need, the next practical method is to inspect object metadata/version list patterns in SQL, but build number from database properties is the cleanest route. So the workflow is basically: restore .bak → query db property/build → map build to NAV 2016 CU.

I don't remember the exact table name, but you can restore the database first, and then you can find the build number in a table like $ndo$dbproperty.

Hope this can give you some hints.
    Thanks.
