Outbound sorting/pallet building

For a customer we are implementing the outbound sorting. After the packing, they want to build pallets based on carrier service and ship date. They scan the carrier as sort position (eg 'DPD1', ‘DPD2’…) and a preprinted pallet ID (eg 'PLDPD001') as LP. Once the pallet (LP) is full, we close the outbound sorting position and create work to move the pallet (LP) to the staging area and the final shipping location with sorted container picking functionality. The pallet can stay in the staging area for weeks (or even months) or be shipped directly. A pallet can contain multiple shipments to multiple customers.

Next to some restrictions, there are some things that don’t work. Can someone share his thoughts/experience/solutions on this?

Steps/questions:

  1. Close the sort position from the mobile app.
    1. No menu action available, I can only close the position from the system.
  2. Move the pallet (LP) in the warehouse (work template consists of 2 pick/put steps, first to stage, then to outbound location)
    1. All work set on the work template can be performed, but after the first pick/put step, when I want to move my pallet (LP) to another staging location, it fails because there’s still open work.
    2. I could change my work template and setup only 1 pick/put pair and end at the stage location, but from there I can’t do anything anymore with the pallet (LP).
  3. When I want to ship part of the pallet, thus move 1 or more containers from stage to the outbound location.
    1. The system doesn’t recognize any of the container id’s, I can only move the full pallet (LP).
  4. Reopen a container if something has to be removed and made available for another customer.
    1. Only possible when the sorted picking work has been completed and the pallet is not on the outbound location, but then I’m stuck again because I can’t move my pallet (LP) or containers anymore.

Thank you in advance

    RE: Outbound sorting/pallet building

    Hi JD8,

Might be that you already found answers to your question but I just noticed your blog post. In case one of the questions is still pending see my thoughts below.

    1. You can either close the position via the client or via the mobile device. If you want to close the position via the mobile device, scan for instance one of the associated container IDs. After this, the system will ask whether the position needs to be closed. For the latter action use the outbound sorting menu item that you also used to assign the positions.

    2. Although this behavior is not really related to the sorting functionality, have you activated the "Allow manual movement of inventory" parameter via the worker form? You need to enable this parameter to allow the movement action you described.

    3. Do you have an example of the process steps that you follow here? Are you not using the TLP to execute the packed container picking work from stage to Baydoor?

    4. Reopening the container or canceling the sorted picking work is difficult/not possible. If you want to do this you might want to have a look at the following: reduce the picked quantity > specify the required location via the reduce pick quantity form > if the load quantity has been reduced > release the order the warehouse and execute from there.

    RE: Outbound sorting/pallet building

    1. It seems to be the only option available.

    2. Make sure that the work has all location populated. Otherwise, it will fail to perform the final put away/loading.

    3. Did you try configuring system grouping by container ID on the mobile device menu item?

    4. No experience here.
