Field Level Security on email fields

Hello,

I am successfully enabling Field Level Security for a number of contact fields but I have one field of type text but of format "Email" on which I am not allowed to enable field security (the option is greyed out!) . Is it not possible to enable field security on email fields? If so, is anyone aware of any workarounds to achieve this?

Is this a custom field or OOB field?

I have created a custom field with format "Email" and I am able to enable field security.

I get the error message "<Message>The field 'new_xxxxxxxxxxxx' is not securable</Message>
