How can I exclude Discontinued Items in the Item Lookup window for Bill of Materials?

Unfortunately, I have faced the same issue with no out of the box solution. You do know that there is a feature to exclude inactive and discontinued items, but it seems they've forgotten the "component item" lookup in the BOM window :)
In case you are not looking for a customization through which you can definitely handle what's retrieve by the lookup window, you may consider a work around solution by adding the letter "Z_" for instance as a prefix for the "short description" field for any discontinued items, this will push those items down the list as shown below:
I did automated the process by creating a bunch of triggers on the IV00101 table to update the short description field to include this prefix once the item is set to discontinued or inactivated.

You can add a generic discription for all discontinued items and sort by that so you will know the items is dicontinued so user can ignore the same.
