POS and/or Manager extremely slow to open

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by 45

Small RMS installation having recurring problems (but not daily) of their POS system not opening/starting 'normally'.  By 'normally' it is meant that once the POS icon is double-clicked, the POS opens within a minute.

Within the last two weeks, we have been seeing increased occurences of POS and Manager opening within a 10 minute period or not at all.  Repeated restarts seems to be the only thing to eventually clear the issue.

Not sure what information to provide in the post, so please let me know what information you need to help us determine where the problem lies.

Known information:

1. Server - we have a windows 7 computer hosting the database and running POS from time to time as needed.

2. POS - the primary POS station runs Windows XP Professional and connects through a typical ethernet network connection.

Thanks for any guidance you can send our way!

    Hi,

FIrst of all you need to re-index your database.

You can do this with this steps...

Go to---> Store Operation Administrator/Head Quarters Administrator. --> Conncet (connect with you database )--> Database (tab) --> Select Reindex......

It can take while... This trick work in most of cases.  If this thing not work then you can go ahead and try one more thing.

First of check is your system is working fine with all other program. If it is not working fine then you need to improve performance for you system.

If it is then go ahead and check your database. It can be very big size database.

Any add-ons installed?  Some go out to the web to confirm access/license/whatever.

Does the POS have SQL installed and is it set up for Offline sales?

Any other network issues?  Try turning off your firewall and see what happens.

Are you pointing to an IP address of the Server machine or the name of the machine in SO Admin Server Name? If one, try the other

What SQL protocols are installed for each machine?  You only need TCP/IP and Named Pipes with Named Pipes listed first.

We always create a icon on the Taskbar for POS and Manager. When down there they only require a single click to start.  We have clients that triiple or more click on the Desktop icons when they don't start immeadiately and Windows will attempt to start multiple copies of RMS, which it _really_ doesn't like to do.

    Hello,

Try disabling all of the hardware and then testing one at a time, could be hardware causing this. I would definately check the line display.

Remove all 3rd party add ins if you have any installed, test to see if it is still slow.

Try connecting to the sample database and check to see if it is still slow.

Everyone, I was expecting to see updates through email -- I must have missed them.  I'm still having the issues and will start trying these items asap.

    Questions:

    1. How often should one reindex the database?  Is there a symptom that triggers this the need for this activity?

    2. Any particular virus programs that cause issues?  We are using Norton 360 (Comcast provides it for free).
