Issue with Report Generation and Excel Export

ReportReport

Hi,

I’m experiencing an issue when generating reports. The error message shown below appears during the process. I have already tried using different browsers and updating them, and my network connection is stable, but the problem persists. The same issue also occurs when exporting reports to Excel.

Thank you.

I’ve been experiencing this issue as well, ever since the update that addressed the Personalize and Page Inspection features last week.
I’ve tried switching browsers, clearing the browser cache, signing out, and restarting the environment, but the issue still persists. This has impacted our operations, especially during the end-of-month period when a large volume of documents needs to be printed.

    My current version is W1 26.4 (Platform 26.0.39765.0 + Application 26.4.37194.39971).

There have been a lot of reports from other users with this error so it seems like its a bug with printing reports.

I just tested it in my environment and didn't find this problem yet.
    Version: W1 26.5 (Platform 26.0.39898.0 + Application 26.5.38752.39969)
I checked for known bugs and there are none at the moment.

    Thanks

    Hi,

This usually indicates a report or service-side issue in Business Central rather than a browser or network problem.
    Steps to troubleshoot:
    > Clear the BC client cache (Sign out > clear browser cache > sign in again).
    > Check if the report dataset is too large; try filtering or reducing rows.
    > Verify that the Excel export service is running and up to date.
    > Test the same report in another environment (sandbox or production) to see if it’s environment specific.
    > If the issue persists, raise a support ticket with Microsoft including the error message and report name.

Temporarily, exporting smaller datasets or using PDF/Word formats may bypass the Excel issue.

    Thanks
    Rishabh

    Hi Sanchith,

The official Microsoft guidance for this error is in the Troubleshooting Reports documentation. The error “An error occurred while trying to display the report” usually happens during the rendering phase of a report in Business Central. This can affect both preview and export to Excel because both rely on the report dataset and layout.

    Root Causes

    • Corrupted or incompatible report layout (RDLC or Word).
    • Unsupported fonts or layout elements in RDLC.
    • Report dataset issues (filters returning no data or invalid data types).
    • Platform limits (too many rows, timeout).
    • Permissions missing for Excel export.

    Recommended Fixes

    1. Validate the Report Layout
      • If using a custom RDLC or Word layout, try switching to the built-in layout via Report Layout Selection.
      • If the built-in layout works, re-import or redesign the custom layout.
      • Manage Report Layouts
    2. Check Report Dataset
      • Export the dataset to Excel (data only) or XML from the request page to confirm data is returned.
      • If the dataset is empty or invalid, adjust filters or fix AL code.
      • Troubleshoot Reports[1]
    3. Test in Sandbox
      • Run the same report in a sandbox or with a different user profile to rule out personalization or permission issues.
    4. Check Permissions
      • Ensure the user has EXPORT REPORT EXCEL and D365 REPORT permission sets.
    5. For On-Premises
      • Restart the Business Central Server instance and verify that the RDLC rendering components are installed.
Still having issue, please raise a ticket with Microsoft.

    Hi

It’s a known intermittent issue affecting some tenants recently. Try clearing cache, switching browsers, and using the standard layout. If multiple users are impacted, it’s likely Microsoft-side, and raising a support ticket is recommended

    Thanks

Can you export list page to excel  , Are you able to export into excel ?

Can you check the Permission assigned to user if everything is working fine
