I think you can go to help and then about on the CRM client. You then have to lookup the version number
If you click on the 'Gear' icon on the top right of Dynamics CRM and then select 'About' in the drop down menu you will see a dialog box that has a head similar to:
The first version is the CRM Server version and the second is the Database version.
If you are using CRM Onprem then you can use Deployment Manager to look up these two version number.
In the example above you can see that I have the most recent service update to my CRM online - but the database was not changed by this update (I think it was to fix the recent Chrome issue).
