Install of database GPXX failed! Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities will now shut down

Posted on by 22,782

I'm getting the above error on GP 9 SP3 when I try to create a new company with db name of GPXX (where XX has been several different things as I have tried a few times with different names).

KB920832 (support.microsoft.com/.../920832) refers to using a SQL key word in the DB name but this is not the problem I am seeing.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

As an aside, this company has more than 1 GP installation and I have successfully created a new company recently for one of the other installations without a problem.

In my case the problem was a corrupt server component install.

I installed another GP 9 client with the server components and I was able to create the company without any errors.

The ClearCompany script will remove all references to company databases that no longer exist in the SY01500. No harm will come to your good 12 companies. Also make sure a database does not already exist in your SQL data folder. Database names must be unique. You obtain the Clear Company script from here:

    i found this

    support.microsoft.com/.../920832

in my case my dbase name KEY turns out to be a sql command so it is an invalid dbase name.  Any GP install script sees KEY and thinks it is the command not the dbase name so fails.

The kb reviews how to properly remove reference to the dbase.

    HI Richard

I just had the same thing happen to me today.

Utilities did not close as the message stated it would.  It took me back to what would you like to do.  I tried to create a new company again.  This time I got Database GPXX already in use.

    So something has saved somewhere.

GP Utilities can see the dbase and wants to upgrade it.  Trying to upgrade I get instant error messages cannot drop xxxx.

So ok I think the dbase must be empty and (foolishly?) I have asked IT to drop the dbase thinking that I would then be able to create it again.

Utilities can still see the dbase somewhere and still wants to upgrade it.

what is the clear companies script that you refer to above?  Can I run it against a company with 12+ good dbases?

    thanks

If you look in the DYNAMICS..SY01500 table do you see any spuriuous companies? Try running the ClearCompanies script. Perhaps there is a remnant of a failed installation somewhere in one of the databases.

    Hi Richard,

    Yes, there is space.

I'm logged in as a Domain Admin.

    Logged into SQL as sa

    SQL is 2000 SP4

I'm checking a SQL Log I've just made by switching it on in the dex.ini file.

I'll check in the morning when there are no other users logged into GP.

Have you tried running SQL Profiler while the creation fails? What version of SQL are you using with GP 9? Is there sufficient space to create the new database? Are you logged in as someone with admin rights on the server? It may be a permission problem and the database files cannot be created.
