Upgrade from CRM 2011 On-premise to CRM 2016/Dynamics 365 online

Hello everyone

I am planning to do an upgrade from CRM 2011 on-premise to CRM 2016/Dynamics 365 online. I would need some help regarding the step by step procedure for this upgrade please?

Also I am not sure which versions to choose CRM 2016 or Dynamics 365 online because,

the users have only been working in an on-premise system and never seen a cloud version before

(Don't want to make it complicated for them)

Will be much appreciated if anyone can suggest please?

Regards

ABa

So there is no direct upgrade between 2011 and 2016/365.

If you want to keep it on premises, you could take a backup copy of your database, and go through upgrading through each version.  2011 ->  2013 -> 2016 -> 2016.  This actually works pretty well, though you will miss some of the new navigation improvements.

If you want to go online, I'd still start with the above.  The only real differences are whether or not it's local to you, or hosted by MS.

    Hi Wayne

Thanks for your reply. So you mean we should have 3 different CRM online systems (2013, 2015, 2016). Then we do an import of solution from one solution to other?

And regarding the data, as for on-premise it is the DB managed by us, so how do we move the data?

One thing to be aware of if moving from onprem to online is that there is no direct upgrade path. You can't just import a database backup into a CRM online instance as you can with CRM on prem. This means that moving online is a full data migration - you have to migrate all of your data one record at a time into CRM online. There are tools (Scribe, Kingswaysoft) which can help with this, but this may be a consideration for you in your decision making.

There are many compelling reasons to go online (some features are only available online, you don't have to worry about server maintenance, upgrades, etc) so it's not a clear cut, one is better than the other, decision.
