Adding auto number field to existing records

Hi all,

I am implementing an auto number field when a new record of type lead, opportunity and account is created.  There are thousands of existing records in the system already.  How do I go about adding the auto number field to the existing records?  My goal is to start the counter for the auto number with the existing records.  Is this possible to do with CRM online?  Please advise.

so you have created a new auto number field.

What creates the value for the for the autonumber field, plugin or workflow or something else?

You could export all the fields with the auto number field.  Fill in the autonumber field in excel and import the records back in.

if it's a plugin or workflow which runs on the update of a record then maybe you could bulk edit the records to trigger the plugin, changing a field which isn't used much

Export all the Existing records into excel with  option "Re-import" option enabled. After that update the auto number field in excel then re-import the records back to crm . This will update auto number for all existing records. Make sure your view contains Auto number field as column while exporting ( Also include only one or two fields apart from auto number filed in the view to speed import )

    Hi Ben,

It's a workflow that creates the value for the autonumber field.  How do I do a bulk edit?  There are thousands of records so it will be a pain to fill in the autonumber field in excel.

    Degmo,

Use the Bulk Workflow tool to run it against the records.
