Duplicate CRM enviroment for development

Hi all,

We currently have a CRM 2013 enviroment with Live and Dev on the same CRM server. The database is on its own dedicated server.

I need to create a new development enviroment on a  seperate server so i can test upgrades etc without affecting live.

Ive looked around the forums and seen various posts on copying the database etc but what is the best way to just copy the CRM enviroment (i dont need any of the data from live).

Do i need to install CRM 2013 on the new server, install and setup all the same plugins etc as exist on the live server, setup security, amend sitemap to match existing server and then do a solution export from the existing CRM server to the new server to pull everything across?

Is there an easier way to do this?

Thanks,

Terry

Most of the things you are talking about you should be able to push into a single solution. So yes I would create a new install (ensure that you match as closely as possible all of the settings to live, enabling you to reproduce errors in dev/test). Import any solutions that you have into Dev and then use the reference data importer from mscrmtoolkit.codeplex.com to push all your standing records across.

I would take one of the recent backups from your current live database and restore it on the SQL server of the new instance you install.  You can use the org import utility in CRM Deployment Manager to import it as an org in your new deployment.  Then, you know that it is exactly the same (given you have the same hardware/software on the new servers).

    Hello Terry,

Yep - it is possible and highly recommended.  To build a test environment, install the crm in the new environment.  Then backup and restore your production database to your test sql server.  You can then use the crm deployment manager to import the organization.  All customizations, plugins, reports, data are stored in the database.

Anyone have the basic step by step to setup the development environment for Custom CRM online reports? Mentions using Visual studio 2012 here: technet.microsoft.com/.../dn531081.aspx but this is no longer supported. Any ideas??
