I am a brand new user and I am having trouble understanding how I would record information from a recent sales call for a contact in this CRM.

Welcome to the exciting world of Microsoft Dynamics CRM!
There are numerous places to record a phone call including from the Outlook ribbon, as well as from the main navigation within CRM. However, most people would likely record a phone call WHILE looking at the contact record. You simply go up to Ribbon to the Add tab, and select Phone Call. After you've entered your notes, click Save as Complete (indicating the phone call was made already versus scheduled for the future.)
Your phone call/notes will then appear under the Closed Activities on the left navigation of the contact.
What if the call is a face to face call at the customers office?
Then you might consider adding an appointment rather than a call.
