Product Configurator (BOM connection)

Hi,

We are currently working with setting up the Product Configurator for our business. We more or less produce one single product, however, customers can have a need to change different dimensions in the components of the finished product. What have been done so far, is that our BOM strucuture has been changed according to fit the modulization for the Product Configurator - this creates issue in terms of costing is not being allocated correctly as the BOM does not reflect the true business.

My question is; do we really need to change our BOM structure to fit it to the Product Configuration?

We want to link to the BOM lines of course, but would it not be possible to do that on the item line?

The purpose of the product configurator is to change the BOM structure for you, not the other way around. I would recommend reviewing the documentation.

Hi Boennelykken,

Question to answer first is why are you using product confiscator? Why the selection is made for it?

Why I am asking is that I have seen people whose business needs product configurator use pre-defined variants and customers whose business need pre-defined variants trying to map product configurator.

Have you considered dimension based configuration? Here you use BOM lines and define constraints and group to control variations.

Product configurator is for those industry whose most of orders for a type of product are differ in variations.

Thank you for your respond. Please find the answers below:

Why are you using product configurator / Why selection is made for it
Roughly speaking, we produce pretty much the same product for all our customers, however, each customer have specific needs in terms of the quality and strength of the product. This means, that between each customer we scenarios where we need to change either material used, the dimension of the material, or adding components. Hence, we want to be able to apply the product configurator to quickly create a fitting configuration to the customer based on their needs such that we can process the sales order quickly and plan material accordingly.

Have you considered dimension based configuration?
I think the internal knowledge is limited in the product configuration aspect which is why that we currently have made configuration templates for each of our customers. This means that our sales team actually cannot apply the product configurator - only the design team.
