Before I get to the main screen I get a red symbol with an X in it with the text "An error has occurred". No other details are provided. Where do I go to determine what the error actually is.

You can also enable tracing on CRM Server at verbose level by following support.microsoft.com/.../907490 and look for the error or exception when you login in CRM.

There was a problem with the server itself. The Active Directory database became corrupted. This prevented access to the CRM system. I restored the database from a backup and it is now running again.

    Thanks for your help.
