Upgrade to GP 2015

Hi there,

We are currently running GP 2010 and were thinking of upgrading to GP 2015.  We were informed by our outside consultants that the upgrade could take up to 4 months.  Has someone done a similar upgrade to GP 2015 and if so, did the upgrade take months to complete?  Thanks very much.

Normally we will do a test upgrade in a test environment to see if there are any issues and if there are none we then schedule the production upgrade. I suppose if you have 10,000 workstations you could stretch it out to 4 months but after you have completed the test upgrade then you will have a much better idea of how long the upgrade will take. Usually going from GP 2010 to GP 2015 involves a new server and perhaps new workstations. If you are talking the time it takes to design a new server, get it ordered and then have it delivered along with your workstations it could takes a few months. But the actual upgrade of GP will not take nearly that long. Of course, depending on your security constraints, third party products, integration and customizations the length of time will vary. It is best to design a plan and identify all that has to be done. Get all your team members on board and set expectations and deliverables and then assign the appropriate team members to each phase of the project.

Richard's answer is right on. However, reading your question, I wonder if there is a maybe a miscommunication or misunderstanding? They didn't mean it would actually take 4 months of active work to upgrade you, did they? Wouldn't that mean you would be down for 4 months?

They most likely meant that between planning/testing/new hardware/etc., the whole process would take 4 months from when you give them the go ahead to completion. Depending on the size and complexities of your GP environment that might be entirely reasonable.

Or maybe they meant they are booked for the next 4 months and can schedule your upgrade in 4 months? Without more context and a lot more detail, it's impossible to really answer what you're asking.

That said, most of the upgrades that we do are completed over a weekend. You stop work on the old system on Friday. On Monday you have the new system available. However, we have done upgrades where the planning/testing/etc. took several months because of:

    - waiting for new hardware/software

    - waiting for approvals

    - availability of internal resources

    - issues discovered during testing

    - waiting for 3rd party vendors and support

    - other projects scheduled

Thank you for the response. Yes, the whole process was estimated at 4 months worth of time for planning/testing/new hardware/ etc.  I was curious about the timeframe since this amount of time for an upgrade seems quite excessive.  It also made me wonder if any future upgrades would have the same requirements.  This seems like a full implementation timeframe rather than an upgrade.  Thanks again for your responses.

    RE: Upgrade to GP 2015

We just upgraded GP2010 with the latest  installed patch, this allowed the consultants to migrate the data directly to GP2015 and it took about 6 weeks.

We only have two servers and 5 clients and 7 small companies.

We had been using FRX for some of the reports from the 2010 database and now are using Management Reporter, there are some of the more complicated FRX reports that are not working in MR.  If you need MR you will need your accounting network set up with the server running web services, Domain - Active Directory  Domain Controller and DNS service, this last part I did myself (I’m not an IT guy) which was a real headache.

One minor correction, MR 2012 does not require web services to be installed on the server. I always install it with a domain service account that is a local admin on the server on which it is being installed. The installation will also require an account that can create databases inside your SQL instance.

Rich, I  thought that MR needed a web server ; how would the MR WEB VIEWER function without a web service?  Back in October I was (white knuckling /freaking out) about setting up the servers and posted questions on this forum like this one.

    community.dynamics.com/.../440268

The accounting consultants made it clear that it was our responsibility to setup these services.

Just wondering what I missed here besides the BOAT.  8>)

PS. Last Friday around three I get a call ( I’m at home) from the one accountant that uses the second server, she is the only client on this server. She tells me that MR is not working and gives the (can’t connect to the server error). Yesterday I  go to work ( I’m semi retired ) and check the server which is showing the desktop when I touch the keyboard. I check to see if the two MR services are running, ( the accountant is working in GP ) I decide to stop and restart these two MR services. When I stopped the MR services the account’s GP session locks up.  (Question why would MR services have anything to do with GP?) I call one of the accounting consultants and leave a message, in the mean time the accountant starts GP again and logs into another company and removes here login from the locked up company.  The accounting consultant  calls me back and I explain what is happening, can’t restart MR services, with the accounting consultant on the phone I decide to restart the server, after the restart the server tells me I have to change the PW, I had check the PW never expires when I setup the server. After I reset the server PW the MR services still would not start.

The Accounting consultant told me to right click on the MR services and click on the login tab and type in the new server PW. Well this finally  got MR running, the question is why did the server need the PW changed, long story short, in the Group Policy – Forest – settings  - some where I forgot to set PW does not expire.  SUPPRISE

    RE: Upgrade to GP 2015

You only need to have an internet browser to use the web viewer. Web Services is use to get data into and out of the GP databases. If you had gone into Services and tried to start the MR services would they have started from there? I doubt it. Sounds like the server got rebooted or the password on the account used to start the MR services got changed. That is why I usually create a service account for items like SQL and MR and set the password to not expire and just leave the account alone.
