Excel Import for Products with Product Family fails

(1) ShareShare

Hi,

we tried to import product families and products with the import template. we tried the following scenarios:

1. import of a single product = succesful

2. import of a product family root = failure (product family in the template selected (column product structure)

3. import of a product family connected to the root in 2. = failure (product family in the template selected (column product structure) and parent set

4. import of a product family connected to a by hand precreated and activated family in CRM = failure (product family in the template selected (column product structure) and parent set

5. import of a product connected to  a by hand precreated and activated family in CRM = failure (product family in the template selected (column product structure) and parent set

This behaviour renders the product family useless for us if everything has to be created by hand. Even imported products can after the import not by hand be connected to a existing family.

Everyone tried this? Maybe not yet possible?

Thx for answers.

I have not been able to use the standard import to import bundle products either - I use the SDK to create products (as demonstrated by the sample in the SDK - SampleCode\CS\BusinessDataModel\ProductCatalog)

Once you have the products in CRM you can then use the Configuration Migration tool to move the catalog from one instance to another (see technet.microsoft.com/.../dn832125.aspx - Manage Product Catalog Configuration Data)

    Hope this helps,

    Scott

Thank you Scott, at least it confirms our test results. We were worrying we did something wrong.

I will have a look into the SDK. Thank you for the tip with the Configuration Migration tool, this will be helpful and might save us some work.

This is an amazingly s#@#$$ problem, or better say  BUUUUG. After spending  about 20 hours of valuable time into it, it's clear that the import template that is built into the Dynamics CRM ignores the Parent field completely.

The only workaround i found was to copy the content of the CRM Product Template to Another excel file, then Save it as CSV, and import it. you'll be prompted to map the fields, at which step on the Parent(Lookup) field setting, you should remove all the selections, except NAME. See the snapshot below. Now when you import it, the parentage or hierarchy is imported also. SCORE!!!! hope this helps

I also tried different ways and can confirm:

    1. As you can read on different sites & blogs, the interface only allows you to add new products to a family or bundle. you cannot add existing products to a family or bundle...
    2. importing using the xml works, but ignores the parent field. Thus ending up with a list of products and not having a product hierarchy
    3. save the import template (xml table) as a csv and import that does keep the link to your parent
