I'm updating custom entity icons in CRM 2016. I'm happy with changing the 16x16px and 32x32px icons using the 'Update Icons' button in the solution. But I'm struggling to find where it's pulling the larger icon used when displaying the multi-entity search results (see image).

Does anybody know where this image can be edited?

Hi,

This is basically the record image that you can set for particular record using image icon available over entity form.

Thanks Mahen - do you know where I can change the default image when that image field is not populated on the form?

There seem to be default images for the Organisation and Contact entities which are a derivative of the entity icon (but slightly different colour and size etc.)

Hello Lynda;

I recommend using the XRMToolBox it has a whicked Iconator plugin: github.com/.../Available-plugins-for-XrmToolBox . This makes updating icons for custom entities very simple. Your able to select which entity you want and quick map it to the 16x16 or 32x32 icons.

The default image is basically icon only, make sure you have saved your changes and published your customization.

Thanks Jason! Do you know if this tool can update the image field (the one that is defaulting to the puzzle piece icon when not populated on the form - see photo on original post) as well as the 16x16 and 32x32 icons?

Also do you know if it's compatible with 2016?

Yes, but this icon doesn't seem to be updated in the usual place where you can edit the 16x16 and 32x32 icons when I publish my customizations. Am I missing the place where I can save this icon?

Lynda:

The "Custom Icons" button you see from the button bar in a custom entity does not exist for OOTB entities. You can't modify those icons, unfortunately.

That location is where you set the 16x16 and 32x32 icons for custom entities. The system automatically adjusts the size depending on where it's displaying. There is no other place to edit these. When designing, you need to consider how the icon displays:

Advanced Find (32x32) - consider only those entities you have configured to be searched

Views (16x16)

Site Map (items under Groups see the 32x32 version)

If the entity is an Activity, from the Activities Feed on a form (32x32)

Here is my sitemap with my 32x32 custom icon and the entity color set to white. See how they don't have a background color on the sitemap? If you want yours to have a background color, set it on the Entity Definition screen. My approach is departing from the standard "boxes of color" design, but I think it's cleaner. Problem is, if I change the color on the OOTB entities, the icons won't show up because they're white and they can't be changed. ;-(

I get all my icons from http://www.flaticon.com. You can save them in whatever size and color you want, making it easy to import them as a webresource. I save mine as a medium gray. Pure black hurts the eyes.

Hi Debra, thanks for the reply!

I've found the same thing with the background color clashing with my dark grey icons for custom entities, so I've see the background color to be white as well.

I'm not attempting the change the icons for the OOTB entities - I think they work well. What I am struggling with is that I have changed the 16x16 and 32x32 icons on my custom entity (in the example above I've shown our Search Contact custom entity) to be a simple magnifying glass icon. This however doesn't effect the icon shown in the multi-entity search results for the Search Contact entity records. This is defaulting to the puzzle piece icon. Any ideas on where I can change that icon, or is this just a system setting that cannot be changed?

From Mahen's comment above I can see it is pulled from the Image Field on the record, but I'd like to be able to change it so if that field is not populated by a user by default it shows the magnifying glass. Any ideas?

Hi Lynda:

I think this is a defect. I'm going to submit a service request when I get in the office on Monday. I'm seeing two different results: for one custom entity I see the puzzle piece icon but for another one being returned in the same search result I see a blank icon.

I have never used the Image field on the record. I don't think this has anything to do with the icons associated with the entity; rather, it's the image that displays on the form. At least, that's what I think it is.

Lynda - This issue remains as of version 8.1 (last Dynamics CRM 2016 before 365 rename).

As you clearly described, updating the 32x32 icon is the logical way to change this icon, so it must have been an omission from the feature set.

Were you able to discover a work-around or get any feedback from Microsoft?
