Best Practice for Printing on Pre-Printed A4 Checks Using RDLC in Business Central

We have a requirement to print data on pre-printed A4 checks. The checks already contain company information (logo and address) in the top-left corner.Currently, the base RDLC report also includes this company header, which causes alignment issues when printing on the pre-printed checks.

To resolve this, we plan to modify the base RDLC report by removing the top-left company address/header and adjusting the layout so that the remaining data aligns correctly with the pre-printed check format.
Since both the BC base report and the client’s pre-printed check are A4, they can be aligned into a single printable layout.
One option we are considering is using Custom Report Selection to create a modified version of the base RDLC report specifically for pre-printed checks.

Question:

Is using Custom Report Selection with a modified RDLC layout the recommended approach for this scenario, or is there a better/best-practice solution for handling pre-printed checks in Business Central?

That is exactly what you should do in this situation. Note that if you are referring to the Custom Report Layouts page, this page is being deprecated. You can still use it, but you should start using Report Layouts instead. You can create the custom layout there.

    Just add some information:
New pages for report layout administration (page 9660 “Report Layouts”)
Add Custom Report Layouts to Report Layouts (Migrate to System Layouts)

    Thanks.

Agree with the previous response, This is the recommended approach. Create a custom copy of the standard check report, remove the company header from the RDLC, and align the remaining fields to the pre-printed A4 check layout. Assign this report using Custom Report Selection. This keeps the standard report intact and avoids upgrade issues.

    Hello,

Best practice is not to modify the base RDLC or duplicate the report via Custom Report Selection, but to create a Custom Report Layout (RDLC) for the existing check report where you simply remove the company header and realign the fields for the pre-printed A4 check, then select that layout via Report Layout Selection or Report Selection – Bank Account (Usage = Check) if it’s bank-specific. This keeps standard logic intact, avoids maintaining a forked report, and is exactly how pre-printed forms are intended to be handled in Business Central; only create a separate/custom report if the dataset or logic must change (which is rare for this case).

    Hi,

Using Custom Report Selection with a modified RDLC layout is the correct and standard way to handle printing on pre‑printed A4 check stock in BC. Since the base check report includes the standard company header, you cannot modify the built‑in layout directly, you must create your own custom layout and pick it for your scenario.

    Why this is best practice:

    • BC lets you create a custom RDLC layout based on the standard report and then adjust the positioning/visible fields, so the output lines up with your pre‑printed form.
    • After creating the custom layout (export → edit → import), you use Report Layout Selection to assign that layout as the one used for printing checks.
    • This avoids editing base application objects (which you cannot do in SaaS) and keeps the customization isolated so it’s easier to maintain and update.

    Alternative options (less ideal):

    • You could switch to a Word layout instead of RDLC and tailor it to the pre‑printed check, Word layouts are easier to edit, but RDLC gives you finer control over positioning for print stock.
    • Some partners offer enhanced check printing solutions that generate the check layout and align with pre‑printed stock without as much manual RDLC design, but that’s a third‑party route outside base BC.
