Situation:

I have related contacts to a custom entity and I need the opportunity stakeholder functionality of being able to dynamically indicate the contact role (like image below).

Question:

How can I accomplish this?

Thanks so much!

    Hi Barry,

There should be an area where you can change the Role for each contact. This information will then be populated underneath the Role column and next to the name of the Stakeholder.

Thanks Adrian, Yes there is an area for Role... but I need to be able to indicate the contacts role for that specific entity record "dynamically" for instance the same contact can be a seller on one record and then a buyer on another record just like stakeholder comes out of the box for the opportunity entity I would like that same functionality for a custom entity as well.

    Hi Barry,

Connections are probably the best way to create a dynamic role for each record. They provision an easy way to connect and describe relationships between two records in Dynamics 365, and are supported across most Entity types in Dynamics 365.

    1. Open up your custom entity in the default solution, and enable the entity for connections.
    2. Create any connection roles you need, or use the out of the box connection roles.
    3. Navigate to one of your custom entity records, and associate the record to a contact with the associated connection views.

This will allow you to have a contact with different roles on different records.

Let me know if this solves your problem, or if you need any help creating connection roles.

Thanks Adrian, I'm not sure if I'm missing anything I followed the steps and made a grid in which contacts can be added to my custom entity based on N:N relationships between contacts and and my custom entity and the role column I want to be editable and it is not. Do you know how I can make it editable?

    Hi Barry,

It is possible to enable a Sub-grid on a form as an editable grid. The steps to do this are as follows:

    1. Open up the form that has the Sub-grid, and then double click on the Sub-grid to get to the Set Properties dialog box.
    2. Click on the Controls tab and select Editable Grid and click Add.
    3. Select where the editable grid should be available: Web, Phone, or Tablet. Add the Lookup field for a given view if required and click OK to finish.
    4. Save your form and publish.
