Hi Can anyone explain the difference between Maintenance round and maintenance plan? I understand we can do counter based maintenance by using maintenance plan but we can also use it for time based plans.. what's the purpose of Maintenance rounds?
I have the same question (0)

    Good day,

    Maintenance plan

A maintenance plan defines when a pre-planned preventive maintenance job is to be carried out on an asset. Maintenance plans can be related to assets, asset types, functional locations, or functional location types, but first you create the maintenance plans to be used in your company.

    Maintenance round

A maintenance round groups similar tasks across multiple assets that need to be performed at the same interval

    Best regards,

    Hi Community Member,

In D365 F&O – specifically in Asset Management – Maintenance Plans and Maintenance Rounds serve different purposes, even though both can generate preventive maintenance work orders.
    Maintenance Plan
A Maintenance Plan defines when maintenance should happen for an asset. It is the rule/trigger behind preventive maintenance.
It is a Time-based maintenance (Every 30 days, Every 6 months, Every year) and Counter-based maintenance (Every 1,000 operating hours, Every 10,000 production cycles).

    Maintenance Round
A Maintenance Round defines how and in what sequence maintenance is executed across multiple assets.
It is more about grouping and route planning, not scheduling logic. It supports Grouping multiple assets together, Creating route-based inspections (e.g., daily plant walk), Defining execution sequence,

Example: We have a Production facility with 100 machines. A, B, C...so on.
Using Maintenance Plans we can schedule:
    • Machine A → Service every 3 months
    • Machine B → Service every 1,000 hours
    • Machine C → Inspect weekly
Each plan independently triggers work orders.

Using Maintenance Round we can daily inspection route:
    • Pump Area
    • Conveyor Line
    • Packaging Unit
    • Boiler Room
The technician follows this predefined route and performs maintenance on all included assets.

    Best Regards
    Soumitra
