Backup Data and Restore in dynamics 365

Posted on by 1,075

Hello Community Experts,

One of our clients would like to backup their dynamics 365 data and restore it whenever they need directly to their production

I had learned somewhere that we can directly do that in D365 admin center

My question is if this link - https://youtu.be/v1dhWmrg1SI is enough to back up and restore or any other things i should consider in order to backup the data and then restore

Kindly guide

Best Regards,

Sumaira Noor

You can use Skyvia for this task. Here are 3 possible use cases:
    1. Use Skyvia Backup
    2. Replicate to the DB/DWH and then restore from it
    3. Automated data upload in CSV format on a regular basis

    Hi Sumaira,

    1. Yes. As of the time the backup is created, all data for this environment will be backed up.

    2. Yes. For example, if a backup is retained until the 29th day, it will expire and no longer be available.

However, if you want to keep the data for longer than the standard retention period, we recommend you copy your environment to an additional environment and do not modify that additional environment.

    3. If there are only D365 custom applications in this environment, you do not have purchased licenses that entitle you to deploy such applications (for example, Dynamics 365 Sales, Dynamics 365 Customer Service), then the backup will be available only for 7 days

If in addition to D365 custom application in this environmentm, you also have purchased licenses, then the backup will be available for 28 days.

You can also archive your data daily by exporting your data within flat files. For this purpose, you can use SSIS.

Can I extend my backup to be retained beyond the standard number of days?

You can't extend your system backups or manual/on-demand backups. However, if you want to keep the data for longer than the standard retention period, we recommend you copy your environment to an additional environment and do not modify that additional environment.

Thanks a lot for the response Lu and Mehdi

I have few questions after referring the above links.

Since I'm going to work on this for the first time, please advice.

    1. If i backup the data, will the complete data till date be backed up?

    2. I learned that System and manual backups for certain production-type environments are retained up to 28 days. Other environment type backups are retained up to 7 days only.

Does it mean data after the specified days will no longer be available to us?

    3. I also learned that, backups of production environments which do not have Dynamics 365 applications deployed in them will be retained for 7 days.

They are using D365 custom application presently to capture their sales info.

Does it mean if they are using custom application, their data will be available only for 7 days?

    Kindly Guide,

    Hi Sumaira,

Microsoft now recommends that we back up and restore environmental data in the Power Platform admin center.

    https://admin.powerplatform.microsoft.com/environments

In addition to this video, please check out this official document: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/backup-restore-environments

Basically, some qusetions and considerations that need attention are summarized in the FAQ of this document.

    Hi,

Please refer to the last documentation update:

    docs.microsoft.com/.../backup-restore-environments

Backing up and restoring an instance (environment) is now done in the Power Platform admin center.
