What is the use of Item group on BOM header

Hi experts,

May I ask what the use of Item group on the BOM header is? Both materials and finished items have their own Item group defined so I don't know why it's required to select the Item group when creating a new BOM.

    In base code, Item Group is not a required field on the BOM.  Do you have a modification that is enforcing it?  And to answer your question, I believe Item Group is only initialized to the BOM when you create a new BOM & BOM Version from the released product.

    Hi Colby,

    Thanks for your response. As I checked again, the Item group field was actually not mandatory on the BOM header, and it is copied from the finished goods item master when creating new BOM and BOM version. However could you tell what area that Item group affects the BOM or BOM version and what happens if I change the value of this Item group field?

    I ask myself the same question. I have tested to change the item group in the BOM header and the postings are the same. 
    So I wonder when the item group located at the BOM header level is taken into account by the system.
