Can you regenerate the same behavior using a different browser or In-Private mode?

Did this happen only once or is it constantly happening?

Can you try different user? And also assign to me for cases not owned by you?

Also, if you have owner field in the case form, can you change the owner directly instead of Assign?

Happens for all users and assign to me

    Changing owner works.

Hmm... this look like the system internal script are breaking which could be due to your custom javascript on the case entity or some customization.

Verify if the assign works from the home page grid?

Do you have any custom java script registered on the case form? If yes, create a new form and remove the javascript from that form and then try again. Also check the developer console(f12) to see if there are any other errors?

Do you have any custom ribbon button on case form?
