Upgrade to rms 2.0

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi I am running RMS 1.2 and I think its time I upgrade to 2.0. I was having issues with the 2gb limit of sql 2000 so i am upgrading sql also. To be honest i dont have a problem with 1.2 only for the sql limit it came with. Im thinking of putting in a dedicated server. At the minute im using xp as server and windows 2000 as 2 client tills. so here are questions

1. if i leave version 1.2 in place will it work with windows server 2008 and sql 2008.

2. whats the difference between 1.2 and 2.0?

3.. if i upgrade to server 2008 will windows 2000 be ok as the till clients?

4. I dont seem to have the option to download or buy RMS 2.0. can i do this directly with Microsoft as the guy who installed my 1.2 is not around anymore. I have no problems in doing the upgrade myself.

The old saying don't fix it if its not broken keeps coming into my head. This system has being very solid for me the last couple of years apart from the sql size limit, so i am weary of upgrading it. on the other hand im thinking prevention is the best medicine, as i reached the 2gb limit in my busiest week of the year and it was not good for business.

Should I just upgrade to sql 2005 express and leave all alone??

The most cost effective thing I think would be to upgrade to SQL Xpress 2008 R2, increases your DB limit to 10GB and the software is free. Upgrading RMS to version 2.0 will keep you in a supportable version and also keep you in the PCI compliant version. I would install SQL Xpress 2K8 r2 on your XP box and point your existing station to the new DB after the upgrade. If you have questions you can reach me at Maurice@americanretailsupply.com

    Answer:

    1. Yes you can use 1.2 with SQL Server 2008 but you need change some settings on server. and using backward compatibility tools for Administrative tasks.

    2. there are so many differences. I can explain you at  fespana@solucionessimples.net

    3. Because RMS is not recommended  and do not use domains accounts you do not need any computer running under domains or active directory, if you upgrade to sql server 2008 you only need upgrade server SO.  you can use it on windows 2000 sp4.

4.- we can help you with sales and install we are Dynamics RMS Partners, please contact me at fespana@solucionessimples.net we are to serve you.
