Upgrade from CRM on premise to Online without "heavy" data migration

Hi all,

We are currently assessing a potential upgrade from CRM2013 on premise to Dynamics 365 (Sales) Online or CRM2016(365) on premise.

One thing, which really stops us from going to the cloud, is the fact that we would have to do a full data migration from our local SQL server database to the cloud using tools like Scribe or SSIS/Kingsoft. Since we have lot of data and custom entities this data migration might take a few months (to prepare, test, execute).

Now I heard a rumour that MS will offer a new feature (early next year) to customers, which allow moving your local data/database to an Azure SQL environment. This would make an upgrade much easier / faster.

Under https://roadmap.dynamics.com/ in the development section I found following feature:

Easily upgrade from Dynamics AX 2012 with automated database movement

If you are a customer planning to upgrade from an existing Dynamics AX 2012 R3 implementation to Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition, you will benefit from the tools provided by Microsoft to move your database from on-premises SQL Server to Azure SQL database. This automated process reduces the time to upgrade your data to the new environment. The automation of this upgrade step reduces your overall upgrade effort and eliminates errors.

Does anybody have more information on this? Will this only be available for Dynamics AX only and not CRM? Does anybody know if/by when this option will be available to CRM on premise customers?

Many thanks

Alen

well - that video is from sept 2016. I was hoping there is some more up-to-date information from MS on this. That would be very useful for customers considering a migration from on-prem to cloud. I'm going to raise a support call with MS. And will share the outcome here,

Hi all - to answer my own question

I've raised a support ticket with MS. They have come back to me with the answer that they don't know yet when and IF AT ALL the automated database movement will be available for CRM.

They said we should look into the FastTrack program as well.

Honestly the data migration for existing customers from on-premise to the cloud should be much easier...I really don't get it why we can't just use an database export from the on-premise instance and have MS to import it on their end.

    Hi,

if you're looking for a data migration option, have a look at the Synchronicity Echo managed service.  It works out about 10% the cost of a services led option, and migrates everything without mapping.  Hundreds of successful migrations, contact us for more information or to book the service.

    Thanks

    Alex.
