Customer Engagement (on premise) ADFS/EntraID question

Hello,

We are considering phasing out our ADFS for EntraID and we are currently using it with our on prem Dynamics 365 CE.
I have stumbled onto this piece of doc that state:

To integrate Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement (on-premises) with Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory), an Active Directory Federation Service is required. Direct federation isn't supported.
No reason/explanation is given so I'm wondering if anyone has more info ?
