Flexibility in Choice of Material & Machine Center for Same Item - from One Production Order to the Next

Community,

Is there a "best practice" approach to handle the manufacturing of an Item whose plan changes from one Production Order to another?

Depending on circumstance, the planner will alter the choice of material with which an item is produced, as well as the Machine(s) on which the Item is produced.

Specifically, what is the best way to avoid having to create an infinite number of Production BOMs and Routings for each item?

In these cases, the resulting item is always the same.

Thanks in Advance,

Anthony

    Ben,

Thanks very much for your reply. I knew that BC allows us to create versioned BOMs & Routings but was unaware that you could create alternates from the production order.

Thanks very much for the info! Unfortunately, Manufacturing is not our partner's forte, but this gives me a good place to start.

    Thanks,

    Anthony

    Anthony,

What you are describing we often call an "alternative path".  Depending on availability of resources, a decision is made on how to make a product.  We use the Routing and BOM Versions to change the process and material requirements on the Production Order.  We created a link between the Routing and BOM Versions, so when the Route is changed the system knows to use the BOM related to the process.  This works great when you have clear defined alternatives to create the product.

If you are looking more for a job shop solution, where the process and BOM change based on the needs of the order, you always have the ability to adjust the Prod. Order Routing and Prod. Order BOM directly on the Production Order.  These changes will not impact any other Production Orders, nor your standard Route/BOM.  This works well when it is a one-off production process.

Hope this gives you some guidance or at least something to think about.  Be sure to reach out to your partner to discuss these concepts in more detail.
