Hi guys,

what is the best practice to change the country field on account, which appears if you click on the field address as popup, to an option set field ?

And btw, why is it even a text field in standard ?

Thanks.

You can create a view and export the data out of CRM and then import back in as a n option set. Once you import the data you create a new field called country and select "create field type" - option set.

Its a text field because some people might prefer USA to United States of America.

OK I got that, but I was just wondering, what is the standard supported way to replace the country text field on the popup if you click on the address field with the new one I create as option set ?

And yes, of course it may happen that some people write USA or US instead of United States, etc.. But doing so, you wont be able to run a report based on country ?

I see... I do not believe there is a simple out of the box way to replace that address 1 country field with a custom one.

And you are correct if people go with usa U.S.A. US it will be really annoying to create a report. You can always send MS an email asking them to modify that feature for the next release.

    Donny,

The Address composite field cannot be customized to replace the country field. There is a connect request that you could vote for connect.microsoft.com/.../crm2013-allow-composite-fields-to-be-customized

There is a trick you can use. Described by Peter Majer in his blog blog.sonomapartners.com/.../manipulating-composite-fields-in-dynamics-crm-2013.html

Note that the country details are syncd to outlook using the OOB field. Copying the values into hidden OOB country text field would be required if you are using outlook.

    Donny,

If you need the better analysis, then I recommend either using Option Set or Lookup this can help the users to do grouping.

But, I always recommend to always maintain the OOB Fields, so once you get the value, please copy the display value to the Text field, because you need this for another linkage, for example: Composite address field (Which you cannot replace with any other custom fields), or you want to set address to shipping address in Quote/Order you need this address fields to auto populate.

Those what I am thinking the best for now.

Text field, ya I think many MS products also use that, MS already released many versions in CRM but they don't change its behaviour, I think they store free text for easy populated, which ya can manipulate if you want to fill with something else, if you notice I learned also in MS Dynamics Nav, it is also free text, easy to map also to another system and also easy for geo mapping because you just grab the text value.

    Thanks.
