One barcode with multiple data elements?

Hello all, I am hoping you can help here.

The customer I am working with is in the food industry. They will receive the raw material (live animals), process it, and produce finished goods that are then packaged in a case. Each case will have a different exact weight so we are using catch weight functionality. The production run will output multiple cases that they will then use to build a pallet of product. Each one of the finished cases will receive a case label. The barcode in the case label will include multiple data elements: UPC code, production date, weight and the case number for that production run. Cases can then be shipped to customers in single quantities, multiple cases or complete pallets.

When scanning the cases, we will then need to collect all the data in the barcode with a single scan. Has anyone had a requirement to collect multiple bits of information and populate those elements in this way, from one barcode scan? Is this possible?

I have the same question (0)

    Hi Esteban Acuna,

    From a developer's perspective I think it's feasible.

You can define your own data format with such like "UPCCode | production date | weight | case number" or just use the json format.

And you can try QR code if the content is beyond the capacity of barcode.

    regards,

Do you handle the case number as a standard option as serial or batch number?

Thank you for the replies. The case number is currently just a sequential number derived from the production run. Will reach out again if I have further questions. I realized there is an IDEA submitted to enhance barcode capability and allow D365 to work with GS1-128 barcodes.
