Keep track of historical Pipeline Changes??

So I know views and dashboards report in real time in CRM....  But what if I wanted to see a comparison of something based on points in time?

For example say I wanted to see what my pipeline of opportunities was in December 2014 versus now in December 2015?

I've heard there might be a way to do this by creating an activity record every time a status changes on an opportunity but I can't figure out how to create a report or view that would show this...?

Any advice on this?

I know I can create charts showing opportunity closure by year etc.. But let me give you an example of where i think this is limited.

Lets say I have an opportunity status of 1.) Pipe 2.) Probable 3.) Closed

If I wanted to compare how many opportunities had a status of Pipe in January 2015 versus in January 2016, I can't pull this in real time because the status may have changed for those opportunities.  CRM only reports in real time correct?

RE: Keep track of historical Pipeline Changes??

    Hi CRM Learner 8,

I really don`t understand the point of creating an activity for that. The only limitation of creating a chart is around group by on same attribute/field is not supported. Also the Months for each year are tied to year value so Dec 2014 is not same as Dec 2015 as far as Date field is concerned in CRM. Depending on where do you want to put this chart, I can suggest a solution.

    Easy way:

If you are putting this chart on a Dashboard, then create a simple chart Actual Revenue group by Opportunities Creation Date (or by other field like "Actual close Date") Date dategroup = month. The create a view for each year and put the same chart on the dashboard twice once with view of Year 2014 and second with year 2015.

    Hard way:

Do some customization and add a custom field to opportunity to store the year in which the opportunity is closed. You can populate this field using a workflow when a opportunity is closed.

Then create a chart Actual Revenue group by (Actual Date dategroup = month ) and group by Custom Field.

The other option is to create a custom report, here you can do what ever you want if you want.

You may start from here: msdn.microsoft.com/.../gg328097.aspx

I think all the options should achieve your purpose. Let me know if that helps or you need some clarification.
