Records not updating from import

I am trying to bulk update records in CRM 2016 by exporting to excel, modifying the records, then re-importing.  The success rate is very erratic - some records succeed, some don't (they are recorded as partial success, but the field is not updated - see screen shot from test environment where I was trying to change the company name)

This is true even for the same record type with the same field (e.g. company name on a lead).  I can not find any common thread amongst the failures that would allow me to diagnose the problem.

Can anyone suggest common reasons that the update function fails?  Any help would be most appreciated.

    That was it.  i did not realize the dedupe rules would fire, even though it was matching the records on a GUID.  Now that I know that, the update process works fine.

    HI ,

    Kindly check if you have any duplicate detection rules set up which might not be allowing the changes into MS CRM .

    Similar thing might happen you have any plugin or workflow running in the background which might by causing this .

    No - I made sure that all the fields in the export/import are neither option sets or lookups.

    Hi Rob,

    Is any of the data that you are importing linking to an optionset or Lookup? If so make sure there are no duplicate records in those entities
