What is the best approach to prioritize locations within the warehouse for picking sales orders? Specifically, how can we prioritize floor locations for item reservation and work creation?
I have the same question (0)

I would use location directives to define the picking sequence for locations

    Hi,
It might sound counter intuitive but this is actually configured on the Work Template's query. Under "sorting", you would configure your logic for to search for locations in ascending or descending order.  A field that is commonly used on Locations is the "Sort Code" (a numeric field) but you can also use Zone ID (alphanumeric) or Join with the Location table to use Location Type or Location profile depending of how your floor locations are configured.

I personally like Sort Code, easily changed and adapted.

This is the Sort code for Locations:

To effectively prioritize pick locations, it is essential to assess both the distance and inventory levels across various locations. The location with the nearest proximity and sufficient stock should be prioritized for picking. Additionally, the urgency of the sales order or the required delivery date must be considered. Products with shorter delivery timelines should be assigned a higher location priority to ensure timely fulfillment. Furthermore, special attention should be given to locations storing fragile or high-value items, prioritizing these areas to safeguard the integrity and security of the inventory. This approach ensures an optimized and efficient picking process, balancing operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

    Hi,

It all depends on what you want to prioritize the locations, and few examples are
    • Travel distance
    • Location height
    • Type of rack
    • Proximity to pack stations
    • Prioritize pick face

There are 3 options which can be used to sequence and prioritize locations when it comes to picking.

1 - Using location directives line action query. This is very effective way to creating rules to prioritize different locations or group of locations. See below where Rack 04 will be evaluated and only if rack 04 fails to provide the stock than system goes to check in Rack 05 and so on.
2 - Using location directives actions sorting. This is very useful, and many fields can be used to sort locations when multiple locations exist which fulfill the requirement.

3 - Using dedicated sort codes. Sort codes can be defined on the location master to sort them using sorting query in location directives actions. One major advantage with sort codes is that they can be used to determine the travel path of the workers in the warehouse operations.
