Production Orders - Master Material Change

Hello,

We are currently working to set up Production Orders in our environment and are running into a setup issue - We cut rolls of plastic product that can be produced from multiple master materials - these production runs also produce multiple other finished goods that can be produced from those same master rolls. Each production order will have only one master roll as the component, with multiple finished goods being produced.

Let's say I want to make Item A and I am using Master Roll W - When using Master Roll W, I can also produce Item B, Item C and Item D. I could set up a family for Master Roll W, and then create individual BOMs for these items using Master Roll W as the component, then these BOMs are then assigned to each Item in the Item Card. However, I am also able to create Item A out of Master Roll X but this Master Roll (X) can also produce Item B, Item C, and Item E, but not Item D.

What I am wondering is, is there a Production Order setup in Business Central that allows for this type of behavior without having to deal with the manual changes to the Line Components every single time? Essentially, I am looking to be able to create a Production order for Item A and then select between different BOMs/Master Materials for a particular Production Order. If this is best done with Families, I would be curious to know how that is set up, substitutions, versions, etc... or if it is via single item BOMs, how would this be done? What we want to get away from is having our machine operators have to check the line components for each line on a production order as every line will be run with the same Master Material, so selecting the master material at a Production Order level is ideal.

Extra info: Each Production Order will use only one component - we will almost always cut multiple finished goods out of a single master material, so it is safe to assume there will be multiple outputs for every order.

Please, let me know if any further clarification is needed to aid you in answering my post.

Thanks

Sorry I may not fully understand, but it looks like only customization can do it.
Hopefully, other experts can give you better advice.

    Thanks.

While this is a feasible use of Business Central and Production Orders, it is fairly complex.  Too complex to describe how in a forum response, sorry.  I would encourage you to reach out to your BC partner to schedule some consulting time with their Manufacturing expert.  You need someone who is very experienced with the Manufacturing capabilities of BC to be able to make this as User Friendly as possible.

I would definitely advise you NOT to try to figure this out on your own.  There will be a lot of moving pieces to handle the requirements, and you'll also want to clearly define those requirements up front.  Don't make a moving target.

If standard BOM versions or substitutions don’t fully meet your need, a small customization could help. One approach is to add a “Master Material” field at the Production Order header. Based on the selection, the system could automatically update the components on all lines with the chosen master roll. This removes the need for operators to adjust components manually and ensures consistency across multi-output orders.
