Configure Context-Sensitive Help

Dear Team,

Our main goal is to have a custom help website that will assist Business Central users to understand each field business behavior.

This feature is already there in BC, when the end user hover-over any Out-Of-the-Box field (learn more hyper-link), Microsoft business central website is opened in another tab for a specific page.

As per this link we need to modify the link in table “2000000198 Page Documentation”, unfortunately, we were not able to view or modify (using extension or job) the table records; the error we get is “The table Page Documentation cannot be read because it contains system data.”

How to modify the table 2000000198 record value for the help website URL?

If there is any other way to change OOB fields help URL to the custom website?

I have the same question (0)

    Hi Marco,

    Thank you for the feedback.

The link states that table "2000000198" Page Documentation can be update using PowerShell.

So basically I need more clarity about the command that can be user for listing the table details and update it as well.

If you have these details it will be really helpful.

    Thanks in advance

    Hello,

I will ask the contents owner of that blog. I do not think there is such a PowerShell command.

    Thanks.

    Hello Amer AbdelWahab,

As mentioned earlier, I asked around and the product group came up with the following answer which will hopefully clarify the documentation around this topic.

The blog post and the docs tell a true story: Depending on the partner’s requirements and needs, they can set the contextSensitiveHelpUrl and ContextSensitiveHelpPage properties, populate the system table through whatever means, or come up with any other system that they prefer.

We mention various scenarios and possibilities to serve as inspiration. Some partners have figured out an approach that works for them based on these suggestions. For example, we wrote that you could use a PowerShell script because we know partners who have done that. Those partners did not share their scripts with us.

Our internal process is indeed based on an Excel sheet that is then used to populate the system table at build time.

Bottom line is that you do not have to populate the system table when working in SaaS. Unless you deploy BC on-premises, you can’t do that at all. But if you do deploy BC on-premises, then you have full access to the database and can do whatever you want. For BC online, the official guidance is here: docs.microsoft.com/.../context-sensitive-help

Personally, I have done this myself in an OnPrem environment together with a partner as the partner or customer managed to somehow clear that system table in production which caused the context sensitive help to fail for their users. We were able to reset it manually.  It is not a difficult task to do as long as you have access to SQL (Onprem). If there are 1000 of context sensitive help properties to fill, then it is best to figure out an automated way to do this via the tools you are most familiar with.

    Thanks.
