Looking for Best Practices: Using D365 F&O With a 3PL Warehouse (Non-Advanced Warehousing)

Hi everyone,

We’re in the process of onboarding a third‑party logistics (3PL) warehouse into our Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations environment. Our internal (“1P”) warehouses are already using Advanced Warehousing (WMS), but the new 3PL location will not be using advanced warehouse processes.

Because of this mix of WMS and non‑WMS warehouses, we’re looking for recommendations and best practices from others who have gone down this road.

Specifically, I’m looking for guidance on:

1. High-level process design

  • How do you structure core processes (receiving, shipping, transfers, replenishment, inventory updates, etc.) for a non‑WMS 3PL warehouse?

  • Any best practice workflows around sales order fulfillment, purchase order receipts, and inventory adjustments when WMS is not enabled?

2. Automating reservations and release to warehouse

Since the 3PL does not use advanced warehousing:

  • Are there recommended approaches to automatically reserve inventory for sales orders at this warehouse?

  • What methods are commonly used to automate “release to warehouse”, or the equivalent, when dealing with a non‑WMS warehouse

  •

3. Sending instructions to the 3PL

We plan to start with email-based pick/ship notifications, and move to EDI later.

  • Does anyone have examples of how they automated pick list/packing slip generation and delivery via email for non-WMS sites?

  • Are there templates or common patterns for evolving these processes into EDI transactions?

  •

Background

  • Internal warehouses: Advanced Warehousing (WMS)

  • New 3PL warehouse: Not using WMS, requiring us to design new processes

  • Goal: Automate as much as possible while ensuring the 3PL receives timely, accurate pick/ship instructions

  • Future roadmap: EDI capabilities, but email-based to start

  •

If anyone has documentation, lessons learned, or high-level process recommendations, I would truly appreciate your insights.

Thanks in advance for the help!

—Marc

    Good day MarcRohde,

Do you need to track the warehouse locations in the 3PL warehouse?

    Best regards,

    Hi Marc,

There are several ISVs available that support 3PL warehousing as part of their EDI solution. If you now start with 3PL, check if future options for adding EDI are not blocked.
Without an EDI solution, you would need to manually post e.g. packing slips and receipts or create a customization to automate some of that work. In case you receive files from the 3PL warehouse, some EDI ISV solutions can also process them like processing the EDI messages.

Anyway, for a setup, you need to create a warehouse that is not enabled for warehouse management processes.
