Using Barcodes to Pull Up Entities

Hi.

I was wondering if anyone has deployed CRM with any sort of barcode support for pulling up entities or even setting values of fields.  We've got some pretty novel ideas for barcoding but it seems like someone must have done these before us and we are really hoping not to have to hire someone to make something ad-hoc for us.

We want to be able to use barcoding first and foremost for pulling up specific forms. So we may print out a barcode that has a GUID and entitytypecode and upon scanning it, CRM will pull up the edit form for that item. Ideally, we would like to be able to do different things depending on which user (i.e. technicians will be taken directly to the notes tab or something, whereas non-technical people will be taken to the main edit form).

Secondly, we wanted to figure out a way to be able to scan what department in our organization a customer Incident/Ticket is. For example, a technician may scan it in, it would update some field in CRM indicating it is with the techs. It then gets passed to supervisors, who can it and it would update the field accordingly.

Anyone know if there are any pre-existing solutions out there to get this done or where to turn to have this created if we must? Thanks so much!

A contribution as part of the solution. semacode barcodes are designed to encode urls and there are plenty of free mobile phone readers for them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semacode Given CRM forms are web addressable, this offers the possibility of encoding a web form into a semacode for quick access. I have been working with Dynamics CRM since beta releases in 2002 and have never come across a solution like this. Sounds as if you may need a custom solution created. You might want to lookat ISV's who work with our ERP products such as Dynamics AX and Dynamics NAV. They may have a solution and could guide on doing it with CRM
