CRM 4.0 SDK System Requirements

Hello.

Im about to develop a customer portal in ASP.NET MVC using the Dynamics CRM 4.0 SDK.

I have been searching the internet for the system requirements and found:

"Supported operating systems: Windows Server 2003

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio 2008" -Microsoft article, 11/2/2010

So, I wonder: Since Windows Server 2008 was the latest OS at the time when the article was written, is the SDK "locked" to Windows server 2003 (and the versions of Visual Studio listed)?

Or will I be able to use the 4.0 SDK in any OS, eg. WS 2008 or W7 with VS 2010 or 2012?

Thanks in advance!

Johan Öberg

The CRM 4.0 SDK doesn't limit you to a particular operating system. It is more dependent on the version of the .NET Framework.

    Support for .NET Framework Versions

The following describes the support considerations for custom code written with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or 2008 and the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 3.0.

Any Web service client created by using Visual Studio .NET 2005 or 2008 and the .NET Framework version 3.0 that calls the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Web services is fully supported in Microsoft Dynamics CRM. The use of ASP.NET AJAX is supported.

Any .NET assembly that is created with Visual Studio .NET 2005 or 2008 and the .NET Framework version 3.0 for use in Microsoft Dynamics CRM as a Microsoft Dynamics CRM plug-in assembly or as a Microsoft Dynamics CRM custom workflow activity is supported.

Any visualization (chart) that is created with .NET Framework version 3.5 is supported.

For backwards compatibility, these endpoints can be used with earlier versions of the .NET Framework as follows:

The 2007 endpoint supports .NET Framework 2.0

The 2006 endpoint supports .NET Framework 1.1

Thanks for your answer. I didn't find the answer to cover the question entierly. So I will be more precis with my information:

The webportal that I'm planing to develop will be a stand-alone portal in ASP.Net MVC. It will communicate with the 4.0 CRM through its API, im not trying to develop a plugin och change any code within the CRM.

Will this be doable in Win server 2008 and Visual Studio 2010 (or 12)?

Absolutely - all the communication to/from CRM will likely use the available web services - as such they are somewhat language agnostic so if you looked around the web a little you would see examples of people connecting using Java or PHP. It would certainly be easiler to leverage the tools Microsoft provides so running your portal on a Windows 2008 Server and developing with VS 2010/12 are really the best choices.
