GP Manufacturing: Use Up Parts on BOM

Checking with the Community to see if anyone has any work-arounds for this scenario:

Component 'B' is designed as a replacement for Component 'A'.  Component 'B' is added to MFG BOM for FG 'ABC' while inventory for Component 'A' still exists in stock.  During MRP calculations, the system should "Use Up" parts from Component 'A' first, then move on to Component 'B' once all stock for 'A' has been consumed.

I am yet to find an easy way to achieve this in GP 2010 MFG.  Am I missing something?

I am aware of the "Use Up Part?" field on the Item Engineering window, but I believe this field is informational.  Even if it were to work, it doesn't seem like it would be able to "switch" to the replacement component once all inventory for 'A' is consumed.

Additionally, I am aware of the "In Date" and "Out Date" on the Bill of Materials Entry window, yet these do not tie to inventory On-Hand quantities and require the user to anticipate the date the "switch" should occur.  This is certainly unrealistic in an environment with many moving parts.

Anyone have any thoughts on how else this could be handled?

Thanks,

David

The best way I can think of is to do the following.   It will have to be a manual switch, but you could leave Component B on the BOM with 0 qty.   When Component A runs out, Component B will already exist on the picklist, so at that point, the switch can be made by changing Comp B to have the remaining required qty (if A runs out during a MO) or swap them at that point (0 for A all of the items for B).    I would use the Picklist Shortages inquiry to keep an eye on A or items that need to be used up.

I feel your pain.  I have to deal with this issue as well and have found no useful solution.  If you add Component "B" to the bom at a zero quantity that does not trigger future demand.  However, if a fix were done so that the in/out dates of the BOM were adjusted based on the on hand quantity of Component "A" this would help solve this problem.

Shelly, you should submit this as a suggestion on Connect and get other users to vote for it.  I agree, it is a shortcoming in the system.  https://connect.microsoft.com/
