The Role of 'Package No.' in Business Central: How Is It Used?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to wrap my head around the "Package No." field in Business Central and could use some help.

  1. Can anyone explain how this field is typically used in real-world scenarios, especially in inventory, warehousing, or logistics?
  2. Can we refer to Packages as pallets, containers, and boxes?
  3. How is it recorded in Ledger Entrees?
  4. Is it linked to items or locations or even bins?

I'm curious to know why it's important and how it fits into day-to-day operations.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

I have the same question (0)

Hi, The package number is part of the Item Tracking feature.
Some products use Lot No., some use Serial No., and others use Package No. to track items.
    More details:
So in terms of usage, I think it’s OK if you understand it as the same as Lot No.

Hope this can give you some hints.
    Thanks.

    Hi YUN ZHU

Thanks for your reply! I’m still not entirely clear on this. Can the system be used to track pallets and boxes throughout the warehouse for tasks like shipment, picking, and transferring?

    Use Case:

If I have multiple boxes containing goods, can the Packages help me track these boxes as they move internally within the warehouse (without being shipped out—only the goods are shipped)? Additionally, can it assist when I need to select items from these boxes for shipment?

How would the system handle this scenario?

    Thanks!

    1. How is the "Package No." field used in real-world scenarios, such as inventory, warehousing, or logistics?
Usage: It identifies and tracks specific packages or shipments containing items, helping manage and trace them through various stages of handling.
    2. Can Packages be referred to as pallets, containers, and boxes?
Yes, Packages can include pallets, containers, boxes, or other forms of packaging.
    3. How is it recorded in Ledger Entries?
The "Package No." is generally not recorded directly in ledger entries. It's used for inventory tracking, not financial transactions.
    4. Is it linked to items, locations, or bins?
Items: Yes, it’s linked to items to show which items are in which package.
Locations/Bins: It can be indirectly linked if the package is associated with a particular location or bin, but not directly.

Here’s how it handles the scenario: you can effectively track multiple boxes of goods as they move within the warehouse using the "Package No." field. Each box is assigned a unique package number, which you use to update its location in the system whenever it’s moved internally. This ensures you always know where each box is, even if it hasn’t been shipped out yet. Additionally, when preparing items for shipment, you can use these package numbers to quickly locate and identify which boxes contain the items you need. This system helps you manage internal movements and streamline the picking process for orders.
