Unit and Unit conversion - residual quantity

Hi Community,

I have a question regarding unit conversions and would appreciate your feedback on the impact of a specific scenario we encountered.

The Scenario
We have a product (Item 111) that follows this flow:
  • Purchased: in Mass (kg)
  • Stored/Used: in Length (m)
  • Sold: in Mass (kg)
Current setup
Unit definitions
  • kg:
  • m:

Inter-class conversion
  • Setup like below for this product:

Product
Definition From unit To unit Rounding
111 1 kg = 0.45248868 m kg m to nearest

Incident
  1. We created a Purchase Order (PO) for Item 111 using Warehouse A and Location X.
  2. The PO was confirmed successfully.
  3. We performed the Item Arrival and Reception BUT used Warehouse B and Location Y.
  4. Result: the PO line remained in Open status.
  5. Correction: I went to the Item Arrival department and requested a reception for the Warehouse A and Location X.
  6. Outcome: the PO line was finally received, BUT we were left with a residual quantity (displayed as 0.00) in the Warehouse A. We had to create a negative inventory journal (with a quantity of 0.00) to clear this out.
Questions
  1. Unit Conversion: did the rounding settings contribute to this residual quantity? Or maybe unit definition (with a decimal precision of 3)?
  2. Process Impact: what is the recommended best practice when an arrival is posted to another warehouse/location? Is a manual journal the only fix, or should we have reversed the arrival first?
  3. System Behavior: why did the system leave a "ghost" quantity (even if 0.00) that required a journal entry to clear?
Thanks for your help!

Gii
