Feeding data into our project module

Hi

We have alot of projects, and the project planning and controlling is taking place in excel work books (one workbook per project). End month we manually transfer the expected revenue and expected costs from the excel files into the project module in Business Central.

Is it possible to automate this process ? (When still using Excel on a daily basis to handle the projects)? All i need is 2 figures from the excel work books put into the matching projects in BC.

I have the same question (0)

    Mads,

Are you planning on entering this expected Revenue and expected Costs where? The Planning Lines?

You can create a Configuration Package that uploads to the Planning Lines and updates the fields you want.

You might consider managing the Jobs with BC.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Steve

Longer term BC for managing the jobs makes more sense. Given configuration packages are not automated, and that formed part of your query, you might want to look at Power Automate. The pathway isn’t completely clear as the storage location of the excel files has not been stated. You can have power automate run on a defined schedule. So your end of the month idea would be doable.

Thanks! We have winautomate / ms automate as RPA tool but i did not consider Since not all of the 100 excel work books are 100% similair.

So instead of excel sheets distributed to our project leaders you Think BC could do it all?

Excel files are on sharepoint but could Be moved if we find a good automated solution.

Expected revenue and Costs is put into a posting on the project. Posting is called “expected” and Can be manually overridden each Month. When overridden we push “calculate WIP” and after that “book WIP”.

You think we could transfer the expected values automatically from different Excel workbooks?

A full process review is needed. Different spreadsheets depending on the project makes automation even harder. Standardisation is a better approach. From there you can build out the automation. Thing is the move to BC for project planning and logging costs/revenue may prove less challenging and more cost/time effective. If your project planning is complicated then more tools might be necessary. Given you’re using Excel to do it I’m less convinced it is too complex

    Mads,

I agree with Josh's approach as this needs more review and analysis. The standard Jobs granule for project budgeting, planning, and processing provides the WIP recognition and entries but I am not following where and what you are posting too to record Job Journal entries.

You might consider a more advanced Job APP like:

Cost Control Job Manager - costcontrolsoftware.com/

    To-Increase IEM Jobs - https://www.to-increase.com

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Steve
