prevent cashier from overwriting entries in operations POS

For a fast pace grocery store I find the setup I have for Store Operations POS to be a little bit cumbersome and prone to mistakes when using the OPOS barcode scanner.

If you have an item highlighted (other then the last blank row) when you go to scan a new item it deletes the existing item.

Is there anyway to force new items scanned to move to the last row and not overwrite existing items? I will really appreciate a solution to this problem or any tips for error prevention.

Typically what will happen is during a transaction a row other than the last will become highlighted. Possibly this might happen by moving to another row to change the quantity or apply discount. It could also happen by accidentally touching the touch screen. If the cashier is not paying close attention at this stage they may scan in more items and not notice they are deleting (overwriting) the row they are on and all rows below.

Hi. Maybe you can do this next: used security levels on the POS screen, to block the possibility of changing values on the columns such as Item descripiton, Quantity, Price or the ones you have visible on the POS screen. This way you'll avoid any accidentally touching the screen. On the other side, check your barcode scanner, it should be configured to "add" return on the end of easy reading, so it should automatically pass to the next POS line...

    Just some ideas...

What I have done it under Store Operations Manager > Database > Cashiers > Cashier Properties > Unchecked "Allowed to delete entries from transactions"

This helps because now if the OPOS scanner accidentally tries to overwrite a line item it will produce an error message rather than disappearing the line item. If a cashier does need to delete an item I just get them to go back to it and change the quantity to zero (or restart the whole transaction).

What do you mean by "security levels on the POS screen" ? Where are those settings located?

Yes, my scanner adds a return after each reading (that's what causes the problem).

The security user levels are controling the access to any button, form, field, ..., I'm sure you have worked with them before... the first button from left from the function keys on the bottom, on the POS. Just enter the POS as administrator and click on that botton. With Ctrl + S you will be able to activate the access to the security levels and configurate it by right click on your mouse over the field, column, botton or ... Your cashiers will also have to have a security level defined, in the cashier properties...

    Regards, A.
