I'm looking for a way to add a link to the upper right had Gear / Settings drop down menu. Is this possible?

Two things
1. You cannot anything to the Settings gear to the right corner. I mean by here
2. But you can add Entities to the Settings Area in the Navigation. I mean by here
You can also use XrmToolBox. You can download one from here

It is not possible.
You can only modify either Sitemap Navigation or Ribbon (Command Bar) in CRM which both of them you can use to open a link or web resource.

The first part of your answer was what I was looking for. I may continue to look at a javascript solution, or moving the link to where you suggested.

What functionality do you want to embed, if you want a link in the Settings gear.
We both can think of an alternative solution because editing of Setting Gear is not possible.
