SmartList (not SmartList Builder) seems to launch, but is not visible

Hello all,

I stumped. I cannot figure out what is happening, or why it's happening. But mostly, I want to fix it.

 

In the beginning, SmartList worked just fine. I created a favorite in the Accounts folder and had been using it the better part of the day. I got tired of navigating through the SmartList, so I added this favorite to the Shortcut bar. I clicked on the shortcut and SmartList did not display. Not that my shortcut didn’t work, it’s that SmartList had gone missing.

 

I tried launching it from the menu, and still it did not display. When I say 'it', I mean the entire SmartList navigation window. It seems it is launching somewhere because focus goes off of the home page when I try to launch it. Where might it be?

 

I can't imagine how adding it to the shortcut bar would create this situation; it's just what I did immediately before it started hiding.

I tried all of the usual 'fix it' options.

 

  • Alt tab through all open applications
  • Restart Dynamics
  • Restart the Machine
  • Run 'Repair' on the installation
  • Checked the .ini file for window positions off of the map
  • Looked in task manager
  • Used the Support Debugging Tool to Reset Window Positions
  • The option is marked in SDT to Prevent application windows from opening outside of the visible desktop
  • Unmarked the SDT option listed above
  • In the script log, certain ASI_Explorer scripts are called

 I had this problem once before and reinstalled the software. Of course, that fixed it. Has anyone had this issue? What was the resolution?

    Hi Leslie,

    I'm intrigued.  Which version of GP is this with?

    Using 2013 R2, I just did a test where I created a Favorite, then created a shortcut, and naturally it works okay and I can't reproduce the problem.

    But I am curious about where the SmartList window position is stored.  I have confirmed that it definitely is not in the Dex.ini, and I think I've ruled out any other files in the GP application directory.  I've tried using Process Monitor to try and see where else might be stored, but so far I've got nothing.

    When I attempt to push the SmartList window off the bottom or sides of my display, after closing and reopening SmartList, it repositions the window so that it is visible.  Clever.  But I still can't see where it is storing window position, at least not with 2013 R2.

    Hate to ask this, but have you tried a reboot?  ;-)

    When this happens to me, I am still able to access Smartlist on the taskbar and Smartlist opened up outside of my display area for my monitor.  So I always right click Smartlist on the task and hold down the right or left key until I can see it again.  Not sure if you're experience the same, but my Smartlist does this to me randomly once a month.

    I am not being able to reproduce the same issue as well. I have been trying hopelessly to take the smart list out of my screen, but all in vain.

    Hi Jeff,

    Neat trick--I didn't realize that right clicking on the task would bring up the Move menu.

    Leslie,

    Are you able to see the SmartList window in your Windows task bar? 

    If so, can you try right clicking on it and selecting Move, as Jeff suggested?

    Hello all,

    I did look in the task bar - that would have been too easy. I listed all of the things I've tried already, that was one of the first. This is GP 2013 R2, and I've used it with shortcuts many times.

    I cannot reproduce the error either, that too would be something too easy :) . I've looked in the registry for anything that might look like SmartList, but found nothing relevant. I don't think the shortcut had anything to do with it, but it's always good to include information regarding what you were doing when the problem presented.

    I went into the Dex.ini file (my personal favorite), and rem'd out anything that had to do with the size of anything.

    I tried displaying it on different monitors and changing resolution to no avail.

    It's launching somewhere it seems because the home page loses focus, but heck, I can't find it.

    Thanks for giving it a go, I'm hopeful that someone has a clue, otherwise it looks like I'll be reinstalling GP again. That's a clue right there, but I haven't had a chance to try and chase that one down.

    Bummer.

    Do you happen to have a backup of your GP directory, or another instance of GP where you can try just copying the files over to see if that happens to fix it?

    I've had a few strange situations like this, and I now occasionally zip up the entire GP directory, just in case I mess something up.

    Steve,

    Gee, I should have done that!  I do have an installation on another computer that I can use. I'll get it up to the same build and see if the old trick works. People look at me oddly when I suggest they do this, but hey, it does fix some things. I may never know why it broke, but if I can fix it (and it doesn't happen too often), I stop looking.

    I'm anxious to try this now, but alas, I only have one machine with me for the weekend.

    I'll let you know how it works out.

    Hi Leslie!

    I actually had a case on this a few months back. Remember all those issues where customers would have users on  TS and some would have 1 monitor and others 2, and then the screen would not show up for the users who had 1 when a user who had 2 closed GP on their 2nd monitor?

    Well we fixed that in GP 2013 by having individual settings in the SY01402 table for windows for each user. Try running the following script to fix this:

    update sy01402 set SYUSERDFSTR = 'TRUE~506~792~1~1~177~' where USERID = 'Username' and syDefaultType = '96'

    Oh Jonathan,

    When I saw you had responded I was so hopeful!

    I tried copying over a working 'workstation' load that Steve suggested, that didn't work. I reinstalled the software, that didn't work either - so we know it's in the database somewhere.

    I ran your script and it affected 0 rows. So, it didn't change anything.  I still have my computer behaving strangely. I launch SmartList, the home page loses focus, but no SmartList emerges. Grrrrr

    Thank you for your input. I've got a Webinar to do Tuesday, so I don't want to blow away my installation until after I deliver the Webinar.

    Create a new user Leslie and see what happens. My guy tells me this is still the SY01402 issue that I noted. Look at the values in SY01402 table for the new user and compare them for the user that is having the issue.
