Option to use "up-sell" based on sales order total

Is there an option to display a prompt on the screen based on the sales order total? For example, if a sales order is above $500 I'd like to have a message displayed to sell a specific item automatically. This new item to be sold is not tied to any specific other item, so a customer can purchase anything and so long as their sales order total is above $500 I'd like this new item added. Can that be done?

    The threshold discount would not provide the option needed. But appreciate the confirmation that this type of automation cannot be obtained OOB. Thanks again.

    You cannot achieve this automation out of the box and will require an extension. 

    A new type of threshold discount was recently added where you can item will go completely free or on discount when the cart threshold is met. Even with this, the system will not prompt/add the additional item automatically.
