Using Dynamics GP's WIP abilities

Has anyone used the WIP ability of GP? My company currently has this module but is not using it. We're needing to become Aerospace certified meaning a higher level of traceability in out manufacturing process as it is. Could anyone point me to demo video's or demo videos of GP being used in other companies.  NOT interested in third party software interfaces with GP just GP as a stand alone WIP from raw material to finished goods and how information is entered Via bar code scanners to manual GUI etc...

My company is relatively small 25 employees actually involved in the (hands on) of the manufacturing process. I'm not interested in the accounting (all we currently use is the accounting module) or inventory side of GP just traceability of how and when it moved through the manufacturing processes.

Any information or experience with GP WIP is welcome

    Johnny,

I used to work for a big aerospace company with about ten divisions or sister companies which were using several ERPs, but the ones using GP (about 5) all were using a third party software to collect WIP and labor data.

The MO router moved from one WC to the other with the operator having to clock in and out of every operation and entering completed or scraped quantities.

I'm not sure if you can track WIP without a third party or in house customization.

It sounds like you're interested in Shop Floor Control, i.e., the flow of orders through the manufacturing process.  You can use GP Manufacturing to setup Work Centers and Routings, with multiple operations, and use out of the box WIP Data Collection transactions to record the completion of operations, along with Labor Expended.  If transaction volume is or becomes unwieldy, then you can look at automation in the form of scanners to speed the data collection process.

I doubt there are any demos or videos that would suffice for you.  Your best bet would be to speak with someone here on the forum directly that has 'been there, done that' with what you want to do in GP.  You might want to pick up a copy of Accolade Publications' Shop Operations in Dynamics GP - www.accoladepublications.com/.../46.html.

    Hi Johny,

Have you tried to use MOP1002 table which stores MO Variance details(you can build a smartlist using this).  It has Material Cost, Labour, Overhead & Outsourced cost on different bucket.  And MO Activity will give each of the movement of MO with date and time.

    Thanks,

    Babu

Given your statement that you're not interested in the accounting, just traceability of how and when it moved through the manufacturing processes here is a query which should be a good start for what you're looking to accomplish:

    select RTSEQDES_I,

    Convert(varchar(10),CHANGEDATE_I,101) Operation_Date,

    Convert(varchar(12),CHANGETIME_I,114) Operation_Time,

    CASE

    WHEN DONECB_I = 0 then 'OPEN'

    WHEN DONECB_I = 1 then 'COMPLETE'

    ELSE 'ERROR' END Status,

    WR010130.USERID

    from WR010130

Thanks I copied and paste and will give it a shot. What I'm needing is very rudimentary... The owner of the company wanted me to look into GP to see if it can be utilized as a WIP (he's got a uncomfortable feeling in his stomach have $50,000 dollars worth of software and not using it effectively) ...I've never use GP at all and thought I would be able to shorten investigation by asking people who actually uses the software for this purpose. I think I might be better off just building a Access data base and integrating it into GP. That way I can make it very simple for the end user and still gather the data I'm looking for. But I would still like to do it through GP...to satisfy the Pres...

    BaBu,

First Love the name...second I'm not really interested in any cost related areas of GP, all I need to do is track when raw material A is received in document it, document where it is stored, document it when it is pulled form inventory, and what product it was used in along with the processes that got it there...I truly think GP is a overkill for what I need but the owner of the company has $50,000 dollars in GP and would love to see it being used for something other than accounting. Thanks for you help...

Thanks Frank, I'll make that my next read...What I'm afraid of with GP is that "in laymen terms" you have to go around your elbow to get to you arse...I think that GP is a overkill for what I need but like I've told others when the owner has $50,000 tied up in software you try to use it when you can...and as I start to get into the software I'm sure further post will come...have a great day and thanks for responding.

Actually Angle I think I could do it in Access...I've created numerous Databases with Access and I believe I could integrate it into GP and create my own 3rd party interface...I think GP is a great package but performing simple tacking type processes I'm afraid could turn into a "you need to fill in this unassociated and not need for my desire information bla bla bla before being able to use this section of the software." I'm just assuming this of course...haven't actually gotten into the software as of yet...was looking for some direction first...thanks for your response.
