Adding a new opportunity for a contact

On the contact page when I click on the + sign next to recent opportunities to add a new opportunity it comes up with the search box rather than the option to create a new opportunity. Any ideas why this is happening?

Depending on which relationship you are displaying - you need to make either the parentcontactid or the customerid field required.
