Item unit of measure setting for stock and production order

Hi all,

I have Titanium bar item for custom item manufacturing and I'd like to know correct unit of measure and production BOM setting value for conditions.

- One Titanium bar --> Length : 3,500mm, Weight : 3.5lbr

1. Purchase UOM : Pound (LBR)

2. Inventory UOM : Each (EA)

3. Consumed UOM from Production BOM : MilliMeter (MM)

Would you let me know the recommended UOM and BOM setting for this?

Thank you Advanced.

    Robert,

    Thank you for your information. Let me arranged my understanding base on your information, the consumption base on MM, the one custom item consumed 0.00028 * 26 = 0.00728 and this means one 3,500mm Titanium bar can make 25.5 custom item. (3,500 * 0.00728) Is this right?

    I think you've outlined the UofM you need.

    Set the Stock UofM as Pcs or Each.  Then add Item UofM for the other 2.  Calculate and enter the correct fractional UofM conversions between Lbs and Each and MM and Each.  Test it out a little to make sure you got the division/multiplication right and you're done.

    I think you'll end up with

    Ea = 1

    Lb = .28571

    mm = .00028

    It might make more sense to use Meters than MM due to the decimal places

    M = .28571

    then add .026M as the UofM on the BOM

    You need to set it up and test it to make sure it makes sense. I am pretty sure 5 decimal places is the limit which is why I would use M not MM

    Hi Robert,

    Thank you for reply my question. Any reply is really helpful to me.

    Here is more detail situation for my question.

    - Purchase ordering UOM : Pound based ordering. For example : 3.5lbr Titanium bar order and this means one 3,500mm Titanium bar purchased.

    - Inventory UOM : Each (EA) counted. For example : Purchased 3.5lbr Titanium bar counted one ea stock

    - Consumed UOM : MilliMeter based consumed : For example : One custom item consumed 26mm Titanium bar in manufacturing

    Any recommend UOM setting for this condition?

    It is very hard to define what the right UofM would be just based on this information.

    Usually the Inventory UofM would be "what you count it in" - so if someone were to go to the inventory and count, would they count the number of Bars - or would they measure the number of M or MM you have?

    Otherwise I think you basically understand the process.  Choosing the right UofM is really a matter of understanding how you use it, how you want to track it and go from there.

    Not very helpful - but this isn't really a technical question about BC as much as about manufacturing concepts so it's hard to answer.
